Exchange Server Subscription Edition (SE) is sinds 1 juli 2025 de opvolger van Exchange Server 2019. Technisch begon SE als een doorontwikkeling van Exchange 2019, maar er is één fundamenteel verschil: Exchange SE heeft geen einddatum. Het valt onder Microsofts Modern Lifecycle Policy en wordt doorlopend van updates voorzien — zolang u de Cumulative Updates (CU's) tijdig installeert en correct gelicentieerd bent.
Exchange Server Subscription Edition (SE) has been the successor to Exchange Server 2019 since 1 July 2025. Technically SE began as a further development of Exchange 2019, but there is one fundamental difference: Exchange SE has no end date. It falls under Microsoft's Modern Lifecycle Policy and receives continuous updates — as long as you install the Cumulative Updates (CUs) on time and are correctly licensed.
Daarmee verdwijnt het bekende patroon van 'om de paar jaar een grote migratie'. In ruil daarvoor verwacht Microsoft wél dat uw omgeving permanent wordt bijgehouden. Exchange SE is daarmee minder een product dat u eenmalig installeert, en meer een dienst die u onderhoudt.
This removes the familiar pattern of 'a big migration every few years'. In return, Microsoft does expect your environment to be kept up to date permanently. Exchange SE is therefore less a product you install once, and more a service you maintain.

De praktijk: wie nu nog op Exchange 2016 of 2019 draait, loopt al maanden zonder beveiligingsupdates en ziet het migratiepad steeds krapper worden. Oude servers moeten niet alleen vervangen, maar ook netjes uit Active Directory verwijderd worden vóórdat CU2 verplicht wordt.
In practice: anyone still running Exchange 2016 or 2019 has already gone months without security updates and is watching the migration path narrow. Old servers must not only be replaced but also cleanly removed from Active Directory before CU2 becomes mandatory.
De upgrade van Exchange 2019 naar SE verloopt als een in-place upgrade, technisch vergelijkbaar met het installeren van een CU. Geen nieuwe hardware, geen mailboxmigratie. Maar onderschat het niet: licentievoorwaarden (Software Assurance of abonnement), .NET- en Windows Server-versies, certificaten, hybride configuratie en third-party software (back-up, antivirus, ERP-koppelingen) moeten allemaal kloppen vóórdat u de setup start.
The upgrade from Exchange 2019 to SE runs as an in-place upgrade, technically comparable to installing a CU. No new hardware, no mailbox migration. But don't underestimate it: licensing conditions (Software Assurance or subscription), .NET and Windows Server versions, certificates, hybrid configuration and third-party software (backup, antivirus, ERP integrations) must all be correct before you start the setup.
Een directe in-place upgrade van 2016 naar SE bestaat niet. De route is een zogeheten legacy-migratie: nieuwe servers met Exchange SE installeren, mailboxen en namespaces gecontroleerd verplaatsen en de oude servers daarna correct verwijderen. Dat is een volwaardig migratieproject — met de bijbehorende voorbereiding.
A direct in-place upgrade from 2016 to SE does not exist. The route is a so-called legacy migration: install new servers with Exchange SE, move mailboxes and namespaces in a controlled way and then correctly remove the old servers. That is a full migration project — with the preparation it requires.
Exchange 2013 en ouder kan niet rechtstreeks naast Exchange SE bestaan. Hier is een tussenstap of een alternatieve route nodig — bijvoorbeeld via Exchange 2019 of rechtstreeks naar Exchange Online. Precies het soort puzzel waarvoor u ons inschakelt.

Draait u hybride, dan moet ook de hybride server naar SE en moet de hybride configuratie (connectors, OAuth, Entra Connect) opnieuw gevalideerd worden. Gebruikt u de on-premises server alleen nog voor beheer van mail-attributen, dan bekijken we of dat slimmer kan.
